Minhaj Women League Halifax arranged a women only event on Internet Safety at the Inspire centre Calderdale College on 31st January 2016. The aim of the event was to promote awareness about the inappropriate content and contacts that children or young adults may come across online and what parents can do more to stop or reduce it.

Sister Safoora MYL youth coordinator began by the recitation of The Holy Quran.

Baji Jamila Akhtar MWL Halifax president welcomed all and briefly explained the strategies of keeping children safe.

There were approximately 40-50 participants and the atmosphere was warm, friendly and calm with eager parents and young adults wanting to learn.

Sister Shaila Parveen MWL North General Secretary gave an introduction to the seminar and welcomed all guests. This lead onto Sister Jabeen Naveed Community Projects Co-ordinator from London, who briefly spoke about her roles and responsibilities, she highlighted the importance of being aware of whom children are in contact with and how the Internet can be harmful to our children.

Also present at the event was Mrs Sadia who is the Prevent coordinator for Halifax with her colleague Mr James Elliot from the police Prevent Team.

Mrs Sadia and Mr Elliot presented a talk on how we can protect and prevent any incidents from occurring and especially why do groups like ISIS use the social media as a means of communicating.

Finally some vital information was given regarding the number of British women who have travelled to Syria in the last 2 years. Mrs Sadia and Mr Elliot rounded up the session by telling us to be vigilant and some of the signs to look out for.

Some group activities were prepared by sister Jabeen and there were group discussions.

Everyone gave great feedback and refreshments were served.
